Macular degeneration, which is also known as AMD, is the leading cause of permanent vision loss among adults 60 and older, with 30-50 million individuals being affected worldwide. It affects the macula, the part of the retina in charge of central vision, and is necessary for driving, identifying faces, and reading.
There are two main forms of AMD: wet and dry. Although vision loss caused by AMD is permanent, it can often be slowed down by a mix of minerals and vitamins called AREDS2.
At Atkinson Eye Care, we provide expert diagnosis and care to patients with macular degeneration and a wide range of other eye conditions.
Dry vs Wet AMD
Dry AMD, which accounts for the overwhelming majority of cases, is caused by the thinning of the macula. Wet AMD, the more severe and rarer form of the disease, is characterized by the growth of new and fragile blood vessels that can leak and damage the macula.
Can Macular Degeneration Be Prevented?
There is no guaranteed way to prevent AMD, but you can take certain steps to lower the risk. These include:
- Maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure
- Refraining from smoking
- Wearing sunglasses that block harmful UV rays
- Eating healthy foods that are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin (which are found in leafy greens, eggs, and nuts)
- Regular comprehensive eye exams
Slowing AMD with Supplements
One of the most effective ways to slow vision loss from AMD is by taking a supplement called AREDS2. It consists of lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamins C and E, zinc, and copper. This formula is scientifically proven to be effective in reducing the risk of further vision loss due to AMD.
The National Eye Institute says that the AREDS2 supplement may slow or stop the advancement of intermediate AMD and decrease the risk of dry AMD transforming into wet AMD. If one eye is affected, AREDS2 can also reduce the risk of vision loss caused by AMD in that eye.
It’s important to remember that no matter how effective these supplements can be, they’re not a cure for the disease and should be used in conjunction with other preventative measures, including close monitoring by your eye doctor.
