Dr. Elizabeth Atkinson is an eye doctor with many years of experience and a passion for helping her patients.
After obtaining her B.S. in Psychology from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1988, she went on to earn her Doctor of Optometry from Illinois College of Optometry in 1992. She completed externships at Olympia Fields Osteopathic Hospital, and The Illinois Visually Handicapped Institute. She has been an Optometrist since 1992 and founded Atkinson Eye Care in 1994.
Dr. Atkinson grew up in McHenry, Illinois and attended McHenry High School, West Campus. She wore her first pair of glasses at age 8 and can still remember how bright and detailed the world suddenly became when she put on her first pair of glasses. She remembers that every time she went to the eye doctor, she was absolutely fascinated. On top of her memories of how much her first pair of contacts helped her and her great love for science, she always knew that she wanted to do something meaningful to help people in this way.
When asked about her most memorable patient experience, Dr. Atkinson relates:
“Many years ago I had a patient on whom I discovered ocular melanoma (Cancer). She had no symptoms and was only in for a routine vision check up. I referred her to the appropriate specialists for successful treatment. She continues to be a patient I look forward to seeing each year. She thanks me for saving her life. Optometrists don’t hear this too often.”
Dr. Atkinson loves to travel with her husband and her three children and enjoys the outdoors, specifically hiking and kayaking. She loves to go with her family to National Parks in the wilderness. She and her husband are very involved with their church, Springbrook Community Church. She is also Therapy Certified with one of her dogs to visit nursing homes and libraries and she hopes to get certified to visit children’s hospitals some day.
Dr. Atkinson does primary care optometry and sees patients of all ages.
